My name is Mariko. Kittenette is an account of my life in San Francisco, running a business from my apartment, my interest in film and media, cooking and crafting, and how I got adopted by a stray 5 month old kitten.   Read More

Bamboo Jewelry

Lots of new bamboo projects! I love working with this material. The bamboo I use is eco-friendly & sustainably grown.

I’ve made geometric/neuron pendants and rings, a modernist pattern inspired pendant, and a “home sweet home” pendant. I reused one of the existing motifs in my shop to create cherry blossom stud earrings.

I’m also introducing more customizable products: a long, slim, name/quote pendant and crest shaped pendants. I’m still working out the designs on the crests.

Metallic Leather Flower Hair Pins

Finally figured out what the metallic leather flowers need to be: Hair pins, brooches, and maybe cuff bracelets. So far I’ve made the hair pins and am working on the brooches and bracelets next.

… And some quick photos so you can see what they actually look like in your hair.

Miscellaneous Projects from the Kittenette Studio

More leather projects. I don’t know if these are going to be hair pins, bracelets, necklaces or what. Probably hair pin sets.

I can’t help it …

Also, the Crazy Hippie Dress has been wasting away in my closet as I’ve wallowed in painful ambivalence. Finally I decided an action needed to be taken so I fearlessly cropped the skirt and cut off the sleeves. It’s been pinned but needs to be hemmed before it can make its D-park debut.

Kittenette Rebranding

The switch from Studio Kitchenette to Kittenette happened a couple of months ago, but I haven’t had time to blog about it. I still favored the one-page scrolling layout but converted a lot of the ugly links in the old layout into icons. Also, each project now has its own image. Here’s a quick comparison image of the redesign.

This also meant I had to redesign the business cards. I wanted to keep the minimalist design that emphasized the quality of the paper so I stuck with the black on white color scheme. I also still liked the hand-drawn type of the old logo, so I just made some quick edits to the old card to make the new one.

The Iluxo business cards were also changed to reflect better the themes/motifs used throughout the brand.

Rebranding with Circles

I’m in the process of rebranding and redesigning Studio Kitchenette. The name is too long and bulky and I’m not 100% in love with it anymore. I resisted this for a while but I’ve decided to just rename the portfolio to Kittenette, like the blog. It’s shorter, simpler, cuter, and I’ve abandoned all pretense of caring about seeming professional.

This is still a work in progress, and I’m not even sure how I’m incorporating this into the page design, but this is what I’ve come up with so far. It’s somewhat of a departure from the old design but with some similarities.

Kittenette Logo

When I made the circular design with all discrete objects I realized it would translate well to a paper cut. I tweaked the design by taking out the business specific objects and adding the phrase “April Showers Bring May Flowers.” I’m going to make a whole series of these paper cuts, perhaps all in circular designs, and include them in my shop.

I was also recently walking through a Japanese gallery at the Met in NYC and was struck by the similarity of this wall scroll.
